For Outlander enthusiasts fortunate enough to have several days to explore Scotland, we can offer a personalised itinerary following in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire. While we offer a pre-set route below, we are very happy to work with you in advance to include other sites and locations where possible.
After departing from your Edinburgh hotel we visit Hopeton House, home of the Duke of Sandringham in the series. We’ll go along to ‘Lallybroch’ (Midhope Castle) and ‘Fort William Prison (actually Blackness Castle). After lunch we will visit Linlithgow to see the palace and the Bo’ness and Kinneil heritage railway.
On our second day we leave Edinburgh and head over the Firth of Forth and on to the ancient and picturesque village of Culross, which was the setting for Cranesmuir. We can visit Culross Palace, used as the home of Geillis Duncan, and take time to stroll around the charming cobbled streets. We will also visit the location of the port which doubled as Le Havre in Season 2 and Falkland, which doubled as Inverness, where the ghost of Jamie looks up at Claire in the window. Overnight Perth.
Day 3 will see us visit a charming little church, scene of the famous trial where Claire and Geillis are accused of witchcraft. After refreshments in a local farm shop we will visit Tullibardine Chapel before heading north to visit the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore. Here you can explore the 18th-century township where Claire waulks wool with local women. Overnight Inverness.
The following day we will visit Culloden Battlefield, scene of the last battle fought on British soil. There will be time to walk the battlefield to visit the famous cairn and clan graves before exploring the excellent museum and visitor centre. We will then head to Clava Cairns, 4000-year old burial mounds said to have inspired the stones that allowed Claire to travel through time. We will drive down the Great Glen, alongside Loch Ness, to spend the night in Fort William.
Our final day takes us through the dramatic landscape of Glencoe, scene of the infamous massacre of 1692. We will visit Deanston Distillery and Doune Castle (Castle Leoch) before continuing past Stirling Castle to Glasgow. Here we can visit Glasgow Cathedral, the setting for L’Hopital des Anges in the series.
